The ACC Tournament is the premier conference tournament for men’s basketball and this year the tournament will be returning to the nation’s capitol of Washington, D.C. The 20,000-seat Verizon Center, which previously hosted the 2005 tournament, will be home to the 2016 tournament. The fourteen-game tournament will open on Tuesday, March 8 with the finals on Saturday, March 12 and I’m personally very excited to see Coach Manning and the Deacs compete!
Located right in central Washington, D.C., the Verizon Center is an especially exciting venue. It serves as home to several teams including the NBA’s Washington Wizards, the NHL’s Washington Capitols, the WNBA’s Washington Mystics and the NCAA’s Georgetown Hoyas men’s basketball team.
This past November, Deacon Club staff made a visit to Washington, D.C. to personally see the hotels and amenities available during the tournament. As a result, The Mayflower Hotel was chosen as the official Wake Forest team hotel.* Located in central Washington, D.C., The Mayflower Hotel, listed on the National Registrar of Historic Places, offers a great historic atmosphere while still having an abundance of modern amenities. The hotel is conveniently located across the street from a Metro stop for an easy six-minute transfer to the Verizon Center.
I’m very excited to announce that the Deacon Club will be hosting a brunch on Thursday, March 10 at The Mayflower Hotel prior to the 12 pm game. Be sure to take advantage of this event and enjoy the food and fellowship of other Deacon Club members who are ready to see the Deacs make a run in the tournament. More information on the brunch will be available in the coming months. Since there are so many great restaurant options in and around the Verizon Center, there will not be a University Day Buffet in between the games.
Aside from the tournament, there is so much to do and see while in Washington, D.C. The National Geographic Museum is conveniently located right across the street from the official Wake Forest team hotel. In addition, with the ease of the Metro system, traveling to other sites like the Smithsonian, White House and Capital Building is a breeze.
You should have already received your ACC Tournament ticket application. Tickets can be ordered (based on current giving priority) via mail or online.
All in all, this year’s ACC Tournament in Washington, D.C. provides more than just basketball. I look forward to seeing everyone as we cheer on the Deacs in our nation’s capitol!
