Message from Ron Wellman

Dear Deacon Club Members,
The new school year is upon us and I couldn’t be more excited about getting it started.  There are so many good things happening in our department and throughout our university that cause me to anticipate a great 2013-14.  I can’t wait to embark!

When our Board of Trustees met in late June, they approved the University’s Capital Campaign that will be launched publicly on Homecoming Weekend October 19-20.  That weekend promises to be a fun-filled couple of days. We will unveil the Arnold Palmer statue on Friday evening at the Arnold Palmer Golf Complex.  Arnold Palmer will attend the statue unveiling and then “Open the Gate” at the football game on Saturday when the Deacs will play Maryland. There will also be many great activities surrounding the Capital Campaign launch.  I encourage you to make your plans now to attend this important weekend.

Before any of our teams begin their competitive seasons, the third Winston-Salem Open tennis tournament at Wake Forest University will be held at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex August 17-24. This professional tennis tournament is quickly becoming one of the outstanding events in our region.  The week-long tournament once again has attracted some of the top names in professional tennis.  Since our tournament is the week before the US Open, many of the best players compete in our tournament to prepare for the US Open.  Join us for some great tennis and fun…I assure you that you will have a tremendous time.

Since all of our fall sport teams have reported to prepare for their seasons, our campus is once again buzzing with activity.  It is really good to have our student-athletes back as I am reminded every time I see one of them how fortunate we are to have the caliber of young people that we have in our program.  Whether it be the cross country teams, field hockey, the soccer teams, volleyball with new head coach Ken Murczek or football, this promises to be a season that our teams chase ACC Championships as well as national honors.  Come out and cheer the Deacs on to many victories this fall!

Go Deacs!
