Message from Ron Wellman

Dear Deacon Club Members,
The month of July means the return of most of our student-athletes to campus to take classes the second session of summer school and to prepare for their upcoming season.  Their return to campus brings an air of enthusiasm and anticipation for the upcoming year.

There is good reason to be excited about this year as many of our teams should contend for ACC and national honors.  Most of our teams return a good nucleus of veterans and they will be joined by an outstanding incoming class of recruits.  It will be a fun-filled year for our teams and I encourage you to take full advantage of it by coming to as many games as possible to cheer for your Demon Deacons.

July also marks the announcement of the university’s capital campaign.  The Board of Trustees met in Asheville the last week of June to approve the details of the campaign.  The Athletic Department will play a prominent role in the campaign and this is a critical campaign for the future excellence of our department.  As we have discussed in previous messages, facilities will be the priority of the athletic portion of the campaign.  New facilities such as the Strength and Conditioning Center and the Golf House and renovations of the coliseum and the Wake Forest Baseball Park all are important to our future competitive excellence.

Quality facilities are a dominant factor with recruits’ selection of a school as well as our coaches’ ability to train their athletes to win championships.  Our future competitive success depends upon the success of this capital campaign.  I encourage you to participate in the campaign to give our coaches and athletes every opportunity to win future ACC Championships.

We continue to prepare for our purchase of the coliseum.  We anticipate closing the deal later this summer.  We are in the midst of planning all of the important details of owning the coliseum and planning its future.  We are on schedule with those plans and we will roll those plans out in greater detail once we have ownership and the plans are finalized.  This is an incredible opportunity for our basketball programs, athletic department, university and community and we must be prepared to take full advantage of the opportunity that it presents to us.

Thanks for all that you do to support Demon Deacon Athletics!  You are a critical part of our team and I appreciate all that you do for our student-athletes and coaches.

Go Deacs!

Ron Wellman
