It Takes You to Develop a Champion

As we embark on a new academic year, I find myself reflecting on the past, present and future of Wake Forest Athletics. I could not be more excited about our plans to grow our athletic programs, and I know our future is bright.

Screen Shot 2016-08-23 at 5.25.28 PMThe 2015-16 fiscal year brought so much success in a variety of ways. Not only was there significant work done on six capital projects including McCreary Field House, Doc Martin Football Practice Fields, and Haddock House, but we also saw our Deacon Club members provide us with 1,150 referrals that helped lead to over 400 new members. Additionally, 1,499 donors increased their gift from the previous year, which helped raise over $476,000.

Our vision is to Develop Champions, and it is these types of efforts that help make that vision a reality. With that said, our success is due to you – our wonderful donors. We share the goal of wanting to support our student-athletes and provide them with the resources they need to succeed, but what exactly does it take to Develop Champions at Wake Forest?

We have launched a new campaign, “Develop a Champion,” that is designed to help answer exactly that. This unique campaign includes a video, website, emails and social media and portrays the real-life opportunity to improve our Athletic programs and the lives of our student-athletes by investing in things like tuition, academic support, strength and conditioning and sports medicine. Users can test their champion-building skills through an interactive game while seeing how donations transform the lives of student-athletes, both on and off the field. In the end, you’ll see that it is impossible to provide the needed resources and support for our student-athletes without your donations.

I urge you to visit the “Develop a Champion” website at and get a first-hand look at how your donations to the Deacon Club Annual Fund directly impact the lives of our student-athletes. In addition, we hope that you will spread the word within your personal networks. The success of this campaign, and in turn our student-athletes, is dependent upon the help of you – our donors and volunteers.

In the end, it takes you to Develop Champions. Together, I know we can transform the lives of our student-athletes and provide them with opportunities that, otherwise, might not be possible. Join me in sharing the message about this exciting new campaign, and let’s surpass our goal of $100,000 in new and upgraded donations!
