Travel Opportunities Abound This Fall

Barry-FairclothDeacon Club members,

Some of my fondest memories over the years are from my travels with the Deacs, from bowl games to NCAA championships. This year, I am especially excited for the fall as two of my favorite destinations are travel options to support the football team in West Point, NY and South Bend, IN. I am also looking forward to traveling to a new destination – Hawaii for the Maui Jim Maui Invitational – with the men’s basketball team, which is another great option for our members and fans.

My first trip to West Point was highlighted by a tour from my freshman nephew, Rhett, who is graduating this year and will be commissioned to active duty. Assuming his schedule cooperates, we will have a tour by another one of my nephews, Stowe, who is a freshman on the Army West Point lacrosse team. The history, sense of honor, and duty that is on display at athletic contests, especially football, at Army West Point is unmatched. If you have not made this trip I would highly recommend it. With hotel accommodations in New York City, game day transportation, and all the pageantry and festivities prior to kickoff (highlighted by a tour with a cadet), available through the travel packages offered this year, this is a trip you don’t want to miss.

Another great travel option available this year is the trip to Notre Dame to watch the Wake Forest football team take on the Fighting Irish. Watching ten buses of Deacons descend on the Notre Dame football stadium was a great sight to see when we last traveled there in 2012. The game day atmosphere on the Notre Dame campus is one of the best I have ever experienced. Touchdown Jesus, visible from the end zone, conveys a great sense of the history in the stadium, which originally opened in 1930. The stadium’s simplicity and history are inspiring, not to mention a game day pretzel that is not to be missed! As part of the travel package available this year, transportation will be provided from Chicago, which gives fans a wonderful opportunity to see one of the country’s great cities and one of college football’s greatest venues in one trip.

Although I have never been to Hawaii I am excited about the opportunity to be part of the Maui Jim Maui Classic this year as our basketball team makes the journey across the country and Pacific Ocean to compete against a great lineup. Joining Wake Forest and host Chaminade in the field will be Indiana, Kansas, St. John’s, UCLA, UNLV and Vanderbilt. These teams have 19 national championships and 47 Final Four trips combined, and certainly promise some exciting competition. The intimacy of this tournament venue in the idyllic Maui setting will certainly be a treat. With accommodations at the official team hotel as part of our travel package, it’s likely to be a tournament where the team can walk around the resort, running across, and hanging out with, our fans. What better way to spend the week of Thanksgiving than traveling with the Deacs in Hawaii, enjoying the sunshine and taking in some great Wake Forest basketball!

I hope you will be able to join us on one or all of our exciting trips planned for this fall. For more information, please see the links below. Make your plans now and create your own memories by traveling with the Deacs!
